Prayer for the Workplace

Written by Lettie Cederquist for the 2021 National Day of Prayer

Lord God, Heavenly Father,

We lift up the American people in the workplace.

Remind us that work is a gift from You, Lord. You created work from the very beginning of humanity with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. Remind us that work is part of Your plan for us. So when we are tempted to grumble about our jobs, please change our perspective to gratefulness.

Lord God, in our jobs, keep us from complaining about our bosses. Instead, may we always perform our work wholeheartedly as if we are working directly for You, Lord, as our boss. Remind us that in our work, as in all aspects of our lives, we are serving Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and that through Him we will receive the reward of Your inheritance.

Heavenly Father, when we face frustration, pressure, bullying, harassment, discrimination, advancement concerns, and other challenging situations in our jobs, remind us that You go before, beside, and behind us. Increase in us a desire to know and turn to Your Word and Your Holy Spirit. Remind us that You gave us Your Word and Your Holy Spirit to fill, teach, inspire, and equip us for every good work.

Lord God, when we encounter gossip, disagreeable co-workers, saboteurs, and troublemakers, keep us from falling in with them. Instead, may we be steadfast and immovable, standing firm in Your ways. May we abound in Your work through our employment situations. May we abound in love, life, and liberty, knowing that our labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Heavenly Father, keep us from letting our work become the center of our lives. Remind us that just as You created work, You also created rest. Remind us that our occupations do not define us. Remind us that our identity is in You, Heavenly Father, as Your beloved children. May we always remember who we are and Whose we are so that our thoughts, words, and deeds reflect Your love, grace, light, and peace in the workplace.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
