Spiritual Direction

After completing two years of dedicated training, Pastor Greg is offering Spiritual Direction sessions to the congregation. Spiritual Direction, a new ministry of PLC, is a great opportunity for spiritual growth. Through these sessions, you can learn how to discern what the Lord is doing in your life where it may currently be unclear.

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is a form of pastoral guidance that helps a person deepen their relationship with God. The spiritual director offers thoughtful questions, observations, and room for reflection and prayer, all for the sake of the directee. This “sacred space” helps directees grow in communion with God by noticing their lives, naming how God is present and active in love, and choosing how to respond to God’s loving overtures. Is Spiritual Direction something new?

Spiritual Direction is not new, going back to the earliest days of the Church and even the Old Testament. In its classical form, Spiritual Direction is a one-on-one relationship organized around prayer and conversation directed toward deepening intimacy with God, focused on increasing awareness of God in the midst of life’s experiences and facilitating surrender to God’s will. Is Spiritual Direction the same as counseling?

Although Spiritual Direction bears some similarities to counseling or psychotherapy, there are also significant, fundamental differences:

  • Counseling is a professional relationship which empowers individuals to mental health, wellness, and achieving life goals as counselors work with clients on strategies to overcome obstacles and personal challenges
  • Spiritual Direction is a process through which one person helps another person understand what God is doing and saying. Spiritual Direction is not authoritarian, advice-giving, moral guidance, or even a discipling relationship. Spiritual Direction is making space for people to listen to what the Lord might be saying to them. Back to top
