An Alpha Story: Tim Rogers

My family and I have attended PLC for several years and we were looking for opportunities to get more involved in the church. Pastor Sean recommended Alpha as a great way to connect with people and deepen our faith. I had no idea I was about to embark on a transformational spiritual journey.

Attending Alpha wasn’t an easy decision. As an introvert and self-fashioned ‘intellectual’ I’m generally wary of getting into group situations and any kind of ‘touch feely’ faith experience. Nevertheless, something inside me, unknown at the time, was pushing me to sign up.

At first, I was guarded with the others in our group; however, slowly but surely, I was won over by the genuine honesty and kindness of those around me, particularly the two volunteer leaders. I began to feel I was in Alpha for a purpose and that God was using others to reach out to me.

That feeling intensified as the “Day Away” event approached. As the morning progressed, I became increasingly uncomfortable as I realized how many barriers I had erected between myself and God. As Pastor Sean taught on the Holy Spirit, I could literally feel the Holy Spirit calling to me, urging me to lower my defenses and rationalizations and just say “yes” to God.

It was indescribably powerful to have people pray for me, and to pray for others, who had been total strangers just weeks earlier. It was cathartic to admit the hurts, habits and hang-ups that were isolating me and soiling my most important relationships – with my wife, my children, and with God. This was a truly transformational experience in which I directly experienced the Holy Spirit and the grace of God in a way I had read about in books, but never believed possible.

As a result of the Alpha Course and the “Day Away” event I can honestly say today that I am a better man, a better husband, and a better father. And for this, I am truly grateful.
