Prayer for the Church

Written by Pastor Greg Hoffmann for the 2021 National Day of Prayer

Lord God Almighty, You have called us to BE the church in this time and Your Holy Spirit is more than adequate to fill us with power. Yet, we have often walked in our own strength and have done much to tear apart the unity of Your Spirit. Restore the unity of Your Church, O God. Help us to live and work together as one body, united in Jesus Christ to fulfill Your call to bring to the world the one hope of the Gospel. May our lives demonstrate Your sacrificial love for the world.

Teach us, Lord, to be filled with Your spiritual power to be like Jesus, always going about doing good. Give us eyes to see opportunities to be the hands and feet of Jesus in daily life.

Lord, in many ways, we have lost our song in this world. We have traded in our song of majestic praise to You, for a song of silence and complicity. Release us, Your Church, to sing joyfully and with abandon to You, O Lord; it is fitting for Your people to praise You! Empower us to sing a new song to You—a song of renewal, compassion, reconciliation, and peace; a song of praise and adoration to You. Restore the song of Your praise through Your Church, O Father.

Grant us wisdom to be silent when silence is needed, but, O Lord, empower us with boldness to speak where Your Word is needed. Strengthen pastors and church leaders, especially those who wrestle with discouragement and are near giving up on Your call in their lives. Raise up young leaders filled with a passion to serve You; give fresh vision to these young leaders and sustain them with Your wisdom and strength.

Lord, may Your Gospel go out to our nation and all the world. Bring the harvest of Your Word that thousands may turn to You, Lord God. We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
