Devotion to Prayer

By Nikki Horne

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”
–Colossians 4:2

When I read this verse, the word “devotion” really stands out. To be devoted is to be loyal. In the Bible, Paul begins by asking for constant and loyal prayer. God wants us to have an ongoing conversation with Him. I like to think of this as “praying without ceasing.” Paul also mentions two important parts of prayer. The first is to be “watchful.” Prayer needs ongoing attention. I like to think of it as tending to a garden. With a garden you need water for the plants to survive. With our prayer life, it needs to be tended to as well…constant and nurtured. Secondly, prayer should be thankful. We can benefit from prayer when we align our will with God’s will.

This past season we did the Prayer Bible Workshop with Josie and our biggest takeaway from it as a family is the “TIP” prayer: Thank you…I’m sorry…Please. With this prayer, giving the Lord thanks is at the forefront. Secondly, confessing what we have done throughout the day that maybe did not align with God’s will for the day. And lastly, Please…asking God to bless someone or something, or a need that we may have. We have really enjoyed saying this prayer together in the evening.

Prayer is such a beautiful way for us to talk with God about anything and everything that’s going on in our lives and in the lives of others. It connects us, challenges us, and helps us to grow in our relationship with Christ.

Dear Lord, thank You for giving us prayer. Thank You for giving us the opportunity to talk with You about anything and everything on our hearts. Please help us to continue to be watchful and thankful as we lift our prayers to You. Amen.
