Brothers (and Sisters) Born for Adversity

by Debbie Yamamoto

“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” –Proverbs 17:17

Friendship is a blessing directly from God. Most of the vibrant heroes of the Bible had really good friends walking beside them. Moses had Aaron, David had Jonathan, Naomi had Ruth, Elijah had Elisha…you get the picture.

God wants us to do great things in His name, but He knows that the path is not always an easy one. Of course, He goes before us and with us (Deut. 31:8) into every single day, but He also blesses us with human friends for the journey. When our path becomes difficult, friends embody and personify the best qualities of our Father in heaven by encouraging us (1 Thess. 5:11), refreshing us (Prov. 27:9 AMP), picking us up when we fall (Ecc. 4:10), helping us bear our burdens (Gal. 6:2), cheering us on (Heb. 10:24), praying for us (1 Tim. 2:1), and just plain loving us (1 Peter 4:8).

Friendship is a blessing directly from God. In this season where division and strife get so much air time, let’s concentrate on being godly friends like the heroes who went before us…brothers and sisters born for a time of adversity.

Dear Lord, we praise You today for the people You have intentionally put into our lives. As we lift up those people today, bless our relationships and direct our hearts and our actions so that we can be the people You need us to be in this time. Amen.
