Flipping the Switch

by Camille Polzin

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” –John 8:12

Whenever you walk into a dark room, you must be careful so that you don’t trip on anything. Until you shuffle your way around to find the light switch, you can’t see where you are going and could very easily trip and fall. In this verse, Jesus tells the people that all they need to do is follow Him and they will find the light. Just like walking through a dark room, you will go through dark times in your life. It will feel like you’ll never be able to ever see the light again, but Jesus will never stop trying to guide you to the light switch because He loves you so much. All you have to do is trust that He will lead you to the right place.

In 2020, after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, my family and I decided to take a road trip to Minnesota to visit my dad’s family. We borrowed our friend’s RV and got everything ready. We left as planned and got all the way to Nevada, about an hour and a half away from Las Vegas, but then the RV engine broke down. While we were sitting in the RV on the side of a highway in 100-degree weather, I remember my mom and dad making lots of phone calls with different towing companies. I also remember praying to God that everything would work out, and that the air conditioning in the RV would stay on. I remember being so scared that the generator would die because the air conditioning ran off the energy from the generator.

Thankfully, God answered my prayers. My mom was able to get hold of my grandma, who was able to get us a ride to a hotel. My parents called Southwest Airlines and a nice lady was able to help us get tickets to Minnesota out of Las Vegas for the next day. In the end, everything worked out. Even if it wasn’t what we were expecting, God had a plan for us.

Not only does Jesus want to help you, He wants you to help other people. If you’re going through a good time in your life, help someone who is going through a hard time to find the light switch. Matthew 5:16 says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” When you show someone that you care for them by sharing the light, you are helping bring people closer to God. Simply sharing John 8:12 with another person is an awesome way to tell other people that Jesus will always be there for them; all they need to do is believe.

Jesus says that He is the light of the world. Christ is the “light switch” that when turned on will show you the way to eternal life. He says that all you have to do to find the light is believe, and He will make your path straight. Jesus loves you and will never give up on you, He will always keep loving you even if you make bad decisions.

The next time you’re going through tough times, remember that God is there for you. You never ever have to doubt that He loves you and wants the best for you. All you have to do is believe that He died to save you. And He will take the darkness of sin and give you the light of life.

Dear Lord, Thank You for promising to always be with me. Please give me the opportunity to be like You and share Your Word with someone. I know that You want the best for me, and I thank You for always loving me even though I don’t deserve it. I ask that You take the darkness from my life and replace it with Your light. Amen.
