Joy in Trials
by Kat Clark
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” –James 1:2-4
Trials. In this world we all face them. Perhaps you’re going through a trial now. Maybe it’s financial difficulties, an estranged relationship, or a health issue. I don’t know about you, but when I’m going through a trial, pure joy is not at the forefront of my thoughts.
God challenges us to consider it pure joy when we face trials of many kinds. Why? Because it produces perseverance. We know we can grow stronger through trials, and that beautiful things can come from them—just like when a plant is pruned so it will produce more flowers. These verses in James go a step further. Trials test our faith, and the testing of our faith produces perseverance. In other words, trials can make our faith stronger if we let them.
The devil will use our trials to test our faith. He’s that voice saying, “Surely you don’t trust God now? Why would a loving God let this happen to you? He hasn’t answered your prayers. He has abandoned you.” James 4:7 tells us, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” When we face trials and our faith is tested, that is an important time to draw close to God in scripture and prayer and reject the lies of the enemy even if we feel far from God. Especially if we feel far from God. God will see us through our trials. He never leaves nor forsakes us.
If we allow trials to strengthen our faith and bring us closer to our Heavenly Father, we can consider it pure joy when we face hardships. Consider also that our suffering aligns us with Jesus. He suffered before us and through our suffering we can relate to Him. In John 16:33 Jesus tells us, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” The sufferings of this world are temporary as this is not our home, nor our final resting place. One day we will enjoy eternal life with Jesus and all of our trials will be over. Until then, we can find joy even during our trials knowing that they are bringing us closer to God and preparing us for something beautiful.
Father God, Help me to consider it pure joy when I face trials of many kinds. Heavenly Father, I often struggle to consider joy in the valleys of life. But I know You are with me. You never leave nor forsake me. Protect me against the lies of the enemy and help me to strengthen my faith through my trials. In Your Mighty Name, Amen.
