Daily Watchword: O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your might!

My thoughts today (Feb 19) come from the Daily Watchword and Doctrinal Text above as opposed to the Daily Reading Plan.
The phrases “You have only begun to show…your greatness and your might!” and “God chose to make known…the riches of His glory” reminded me that our knowledge and understanding of God is only to the extent He has revealed to us through Jesus, His Word, and the Holy Spirit in His great grace and mercy. And regardless of how much we believe and think we know and understand, it only scratches the surface of the true depth and richness of the infinite God of all creation. How often do we (I) believe that we have it all “figured out” and as such, neglect to have the humility to seek and accept that which will lead us to further growth? And as a result, how much do we miss out on that God desires to bestow on us?
I am reminded of Christ’s words to the disciples as they departed the upper room on their way to Gethsemane, “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear” (John 16:12). If those were His words to the disciples as He was heading to the cross—after three years of being with them and personally teaching them—how much more does God have to say to me but I have not yet grown to a place where I am able to bear it?
I am also reminded of Paul’s words to the Thessalonians, “we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more“ (bold emphasis mine). The NASB version uses the phrases “just as you actually do walk” and “to excel even more.” Paul is basically saying that they are doing so much right—but even so there is always still room for growth!
According to Paul’s words to the Corinthians, “If anyone thinks that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know” (1 Cor. 8:2). The more we think/believe we have it all figured out, the less mature we likely actually are. I believe there is great truth in the old adage, “The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know” (Albert Einstein). It’s not that learning and growth isn’t adding to our knowledge and ability to be rooted and grounded in truth, but that a part of that growth and truth is a greater understanding of just how much more there is to learn.
May we always remember that no matter how much we may think we know/understand, or how well we may believe we are “doing” in our walk with Christ, in reality God has only begun to show us His greatness, His might and the riches of His glory. In that, He calls us to press on and excel even more.
