Christian Schools
Lure Freshman With Gadgets
Collide Magazine May 2008 In February, Abilene Christian University announced plans to outfit every freshman in the incoming class of 2008 with an iPhone or and iPod touch. The University says it's the first university to unveil such a plan, and also says the devices will help facilitate an "innovative learning experience."
In an official press release, ACU Chief Information Officer Kevin Roberts said, "Freshman will use an iPhone or an iPod touch to receive homework alerts, answer in-class surveys and quizzes, get directions to their professors' offices, and check their meal and account balances."
The devices feature a convergence of audio/video playback and wireless connectivity, so the possibilities for media integration and interactivity in the learning process are seemingly endless.
No to be outdone, Oklahoma Christian University bested ACU's offer in March. Incoming OCU freshmen will receive an iPhone or an iPod touch anda MacBook.
What happened to offering new students a stack of books and a beanie with a propeller on it? More important, what do these offers say about the current generation of college students and the pr evasive influence of media and connectivity in their lives? What effect will arming students with expensive gadgets have on the academic process? All eyes are on the graduating class of 2012 for the answers.
